Plenary discussion "Container logistics of the era of change"

All experts agree that the "shocks of 2022" are already confidently behind us and today the container business is showing stable growth. As Viktor Markov, First Vice-president of PJSC TransContainer, emphasized in his speech, the increase in container traffic volume only on the Russian Railways network for 8 months of this year compared to 2022 amounted to 13.6%, more than 4 million TEU have already been transported. The expert named imports (+27.3% growth) and domestic transportation (+15.1%) as the key drivers of growth.

It is important that the key market players in the TOP 10 Russian operating companies are optimistic about the future and agree that the volume of container traffic will continue to grow steadily in 2024. Thus, German Maslov, vice president for the linear logistics division of TG FESCO, predicted a 6% growth in the container market for 2024 and identified imports as the key driver of growth, primarily the growth of imports of the Chinese automotive industry.

Stanislav Stankevich, Executive Director of Trans Synergy LLC, stressed that in addition to the growth of imports, their company also sees and expects an increase in exports in 2024. As the expert noted, for objective reasons, "exports are growing 2 times slower than imports, but this area has great potential," the results of which we will see in 2024. According to the speaker, the key drivers of growth are timber, grain and mineral fertilizers.
The experts stressed that the container transportation market has changed dramatically and opened up new opportunities for all participants. So, German Maslov shared that their company, in the current situation, puts further geo-expansion on the market as one of the priority development tasks, that the current situation makes it possible not only to return to those areas from which the transport group was forced to leave twenty to thirty years ago, but also to additionally open and master new sea routes, for example, Africa.

Experts noted infrastructure problems and a shortage of wagons as the main constraining factors for the development of the industry. Thus, Viktor Markov noted, "this year alone, the imbalance in import/export volumes in the Far East increased by 65% compared to 2022," which significantly increases the turnover of rolling stock. At the same time, the expansion of the fleet of fitting platforms, as noted by Vitaly Potapov, General Director of LOGOPER LLC, is hampered by both the very high market price for rolling stock and the limited capacity of car-building plants.

Experts and forum participants have repeatedly pointed out the current imbalance of containers within the Russian Federation, the problem of redistributing container trains from Moscow and the importance of stabilizing shipping schedules to the regions.

The key conclusions reached by experts are that business has learned to respond quickly to rapidly changing conditions, but in order to achieve the intended goals and objectives of the industry's development, it is important to maintain market conditions. First of all, this remark concerned the redistribution of container cargo flows within the Russian Federation, in particular, from the central Moscow hub.

Yuri Sukmanov, CEO of Logbox LLC, also noted the importance of the fact that operators have learned to cooperate with each other, giving an example with a positive experience of exchanging wagons at border crossings. It is important to openly discuss the challenges of the market, develop a common position and convey this position to the Government – the key conclusion of the speakers.

Maxim Bukhanov, Deputy Director of Business Development at FESCO Group, told the participants about current trends in the development of container transportation, presented to the participants new services of the FESCO Transport Group, the opportunities that these routes open to participants.

Olga Gromova, Sales Director of RZD Business Asset, revealed to the participants the potential and possibilities of container transportation in gondola railway cars as one of the existing unloading measures at the Eastern Landfill.

Dmitry Kutateladze, Marketing Director of RUSKON LLC, told the participants about the development of multimodal container transportation in the south of the Russian Federation. The expert noted among the main challenges in this area the increased burden on the infrastructure of ports, terminals and roads in the South, the imbalance of exports and imports and the further expansion of the geography of regular sea routes to Latin America and Africa.

Artur Leer, Vice President, Head of the Legal Committee of the Association of Exporters and Importers, revealed to the forum participants the specifics of working with parallel imports in the new realities, possible difficulties that participants may face when using this scheme and possible ways to solve these problems.

The session was ended with a speech by Vitaly Tolkachev, Head of the Logistics Services Support Department of JSC Russian Post. The expert spoke about the prospects for the development of the transportation of combined cargoes, in particular with the use of container equipment and regular container services.

Foreign companies also took part in the forum. Thus, Cankat Yildiz, Business development Director of the Turkish transport and logistics company Middle Corridor Logistics, spoke about the development of container turnover between Turkey and Russia, about existing transit services and opportunities.

Saida Rustamova, Head of the Business Development Department at One Touch Trade and Logistics (Baku), shared her experience in transport solutions and organization of all types of transportation along the North-South-North, North-West-North route.

Ekaterina Lappa, Development Director of Conway Container Limited, spoke about the current state of the container equipment market in the world and in the territory of the Russian Federation, about the prospects of the market in 2023-2024.

The Forum participants note that the ESE-2023 is aimed at senior management professionals and is an excellent opportunity to resolve common issues in a narrow circle of top managers of the container business.
