During the XIIth International Forum "ESE-2022. Container logistics in new realities" the business community, government representatives and experts discussed the main changes, current trends and prospects for the development of the container market in new realities.
At the plenary discussion "Trends", the speakers outlined the main challenges of the transport and logistics industry: the shift in the volume of container traffic from western ports of Russia to the Far East, which had previously experienced difficulties due to limited infrastructure capacity, a shortage of transport assets and terminal capacities, the replacement of global experienced maritime players with smaller players, an increase in container turnover.
Industry leaders discussed the complexities of the current situation, exchanged views on key issues of industry development in the domestic market and globally, and presented new services and routes. According to the experts of the forum, the Russian container market has decreased by 16% in 7 months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. At the same time, the main driver of the decline in the container market of the Russian Federation was the export and transit direction, and the least affected segment was domestic container transportation. The speakers agreed that in the new realities, the situation is changing so quickly that it is almost impossible to make any forecasts for the development of container transportation in the next 3-5 years.
The plenary discussion was opened by German Maslov, Vice President for the linear logistics division of the FESCO Transport Group, noting that in today's realities, the Far East is the only sea gate in Russia and, despite the general decline in the container transportation market according to the 7 months of 2022, container transportation through the Far East shows stable growth, while The greatest growth dynamics, as the expert noted, is shown by the direction of overland imports.
Current trends of container business
Evgeny Andrianov, Deputy Director of Transportation of JSC UTLK ERA, also stressed the record growth in demand for China - Moscow railway hub transportation, which, according to the speaker, allowed the company to diversify the portfolio of services offered, despite the general decline in the volume of railway transit traffic on the China - Europe -China route. Elena Shelemetyeva, Head of sales at the information and analytical agency SEANEWS, presented to the forum participants in detail in figures what is happening with the container transportation market on sea routes and in the domestic railway transportation.
Alexander Kulikov, Deputy General Director of Sales of RM Rail company, noted the steady growth of container traffic in specialized containers and stressed the obvious increase in demand in the medium term for the fleet of this category of containers.
Yuri Yuryev, the Head of the project office of JSC Russian Post, told the participants of the Forum about the transformation of the logistics market for e-commerce, noting that retail goods currently account for a significant share in container transportation through the Russian Railways network.
Tatyana Maksimova, Deputy Executive Director of the ESP, told the forum participants that the transition from 01.01.2023 to a new model of indexing freight tariffs will inevitably lead to an increase in the tariff for container transportation, but it is extremely important for market participants to join forces and conduct an active dialogue and interact with Russian Railways and regulators on the introduction of a new tariff system. This system should become not only a source of income for Russian Railways, but also have a stimulating effect on the development of new logistics directions and international corridors and ensure a balance between import and export transportation, etc.
New routes and infrastructure
The session "Infrastructure and new routes" was devoted to an overview of new transport routes, their prospects and opportunities, as well as the development of infrastructure facilities to support the growth of cargo turnover.
The speakers noted that it is impossible to replace the losses in Russia's trade with Europe, but the container industry does not stand still and the players are quite successful in finding new opportunities and opening new routes. Denis Zernichenko, CEO of SARMAT GROUP LLC, told the participants about the prospects of the North-South international transport corridor, noting that by 2030 this route will be able to transport up to 25 million tons of cargo, which is 75% of the total volume of container traffic between Eurasia, South Asia and the Persian Gulf. The participants of the discussion also discussed the prospects of container transportation through Turkey, as well as the Kazakhstan-Russia and Mongolia-Russia railway links. Experts agreed that for the further development of container logistics, it is necessary to combine the efforts of all market players, strengthen cooperation between the state and business in decision-making. Alexey Tepin, Deputy Head of Novorossiysk Customs, shared with the Forum participants the experience of Novorossiysk Customs, telling them what specific measures the department uses to ensure the economic security of the Russian Federation in the field of foreign trade and promote the development of cargo turnover, including in containers through the seaport of Novorossiysk.
